The Korean War Memorial is located on 2.2 acres across the reflecting pool from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is geometric in design. A dark, circular-reflecting pool lies at the point of a triangular field. While the triangular field has a moving quality that draws the visitors to its point, the circular "Pool of Remembrance" pours out and spreads this energy into a place for quiet reflection of the sacrifices made by those it honors. The pool lies in the center of a circle of clipped Linden trees. A triangular peninsula, formed by the main walkways that surround the field, extends into the quiet water. A low wall forms the edge to this peninsula on the south, upon which a reminder of the sacrifices has been carved: "Freedom Is Not Free."
Nineteen statues standing 7'3" to7'6" tall and made of patinated stainless steel represent all services that fought the war on foot. Fifteen army, two Marines, one Navy medic and one Air Force Forward Observer are included. Many ethnic backgrounds are represented also. They are Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American. Each has juniper bushes at their feet.
The 164-foot long wall is highly polished and weighs more than 100 tons. Etched onto its mirror-like, black surface are more than 2,500 photographic images representing land, sea and air support troops from actual photographs at the National Archives and the Air and Space museum. They are anonymous, thereby representing a universal portrait.
