Basic Trauma Life Support

        OVERVIEW:

In the US, trauma kills more persons between the ages of 1 - 44 than any other disease process. Annually, fifty million injuries occur leading to death for more than one hundred-fifty thousand people. Ten million of these injuries are disabling. Trauma patients occupy 12% of all hospital beds. Direct and indirect trauma costs reach $100 billion annually.

        EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES:

Emergency personnel are a critical component of any Trauma System. For a severely injured patient, time is of the essence. In the pre-hospital and emergency areas where the "Golden Hour" is measured in minutes, every action must have lifesaving purpose. Evaluation and resuscitation must be reduced to the most efficient and critical steps. The fate of the trauma victim depends on the speed, judgment and skill of the EMS provider.

        PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) is intended to teach the knowledge and skills necessary for rapid assessment, resuscitation, packaging, and transport of the trauma patient. It also stresses those conditions which cannot be stabilized in the field and thus require immediate transport.

        COURSE DESCRIPTION:

BTLS was developed and is endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). It has become internationally accepted as the standard for pre-hospital care of the trauma patient. This course consists of instructional education, hands-on practical training, and scenario-based teaching and testing. All participants will receive intense hands-on practice in small groups to facilitate learning of the knowledge and skills incorporated in this course.

        BASIC TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT TRAINING:

BTLS is designed for EMS personnel who must initially evaluate and stabilize trauma patients. The Basic Level Provider Course is designed for basic and intermediate EMT's. The Advanced Level Provider Course is designed for Advanced EMT's and Paramedics. Nurses and Physicians involved in EMS and trauma care will benefit from this program.
